Respect is pleased to hear the decision to pause the early release scheme for prisoners, due to start in September. The scheme, as it had been proposed, did not have sufficient safeguards to protect victims of domestic abuse and other crimes, which must be the top priority.
We look forward to learning more about what is entailed in the urgent review the Prime Minister has announced and how it will ensure improved safety for victims. We would welcome the opportunity to work with the government and other partners on a revised solution that addresses the ongoing issues in the prison system, without putting victims at further risk.
